Michael Salka is an architect and researcher whose work evidences how architecture can build in reciprocity with living systems. He achieves this by applying computational design and digital fabrication to bioregional value chains, with a forward-looking approach to sustainable construction grounded in place-based ecological knowledge, natural material systems, and the communities that sustain them.
Michael is the Head of Design for Timber Age Systems (TAS). At its factory in southwestern Colorado, TAS produces a passive-house certifiable modular home building system made from regional Ponderosa pine cleared for fire mitigation. He is also a Gates Cambridge PhD Scholar alumnus and Director of the Master in Ecological Architecture & Advanced Construction at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC). At IAAC, he additionally directs Valldaura Labs' research portfolio in which design, fabrication and forest stewardship operate as an integrated practice. His built work and scholarship span peer-reviewed research, EU policy, World Bank consultancy and award-winning buildings.
A social-ecological network approach to contemporary bioregional architectures of American earth, Norwegian timber and Balinese bamboo — a computational methodology for studying how natural material architectures emerge from place-based knowledge, heritage and collective ecosystem stewardship. Fieldwork spanned three continents.
